The international spread of COVID-19 has likely shifted your regular schedule into a jumble.

In uncertain times you can take peace in knowing your home is your safe area. You’re likely spending more time there now. That’s why your indoor air quality is now more critical than ever.

Were you aware we can install indoor air quality products in your house that deliver hospital-grade filtration? These products can remove bacteria from your air, as well as allergens, odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Today’s residences are tightly closed, which is good for energy efficiency. But it also means your home’s air can be worse than the air outside. In fact, the EPA says it can be two to five times worse than outdoors. This might be problematic since we spend about 90% of our days indoors.

There are many factors that can contribute to poor indoor air quality, like cleaning products and air fresheners. These may cause headaches and worsen allergies and asthma.

There are a few things you can do to better your air quality. Some include enhanced air filters, an air purification system or an ultraviolet (UV) germicidal light.

Not certain which system is a good fit for your home? Our skilled pros can perform an indoor air quality audit. Based on the results, we can then suggest the ideal option for your family’s distinct needs.

Air Filtration

When looking at air filters, it’s essential to look at the MERV rating, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This measures how successfully it filters pollutants.

One of the most common and most economical filters, flat fiberglass filters, are graded between 1 and 4 on the MERV system. Pleated filters are slightly better, ranking between 8 and 12.

We recommend upgrading to at least MERV 13, for example the HC13 Media Air Cleaner, for the best effect. This filter gives cleaner air while reducing energy needs.

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are regarded as the benchmark in air filtration, since they’re usually used in hospitals. They’re effective at trapping 99.97–99.99% of indoor pollutants, such as pollen, pet dander and smoke.

Air Purification

Lennox provides some of the greatest air purification equipment you can buy. PureAir™ S and Healthy Climate™ PureAir Air Purification Systems offer hospital-grade filtration while taking care of all categories of indoor air contaminants.

This powerful equipment can wipe out:

  • 99.9% of allergens, such as pollen, dust and pet dander.
  • 95% of bacteria-sized particles, including ones that contribute to strep throat.
  • 50% of VOCs and odors within 24 hours.

UV Germicidal Lights

A UV germicidal light is placed on the inside of your HVAC system. Its powerful rays eliminate bacteria and mold within seconds.

If your family suffers from allergies or asthma, this unit can deliver relief. Especially if you reside in a muggy part of the country where bacteria and mold flourish.

This light also provides an additional bonus for your comfort system. It may help it last for a greater period of time and heat and cool more efficiently, as it keeps the internal pieces clean.

Our air quality engineers suggest installing one of these lights with an upgraded filter, such as our Carbon Clean 16® Media Air Cleaner, for the greatest effect. This filter offers industry-leading MERV 16 filtration combined with carbon-coated fibers to trap particles in your residence’s air. It fulfills this without limiting your comfort system’s airflow.

Whole-Home Humidifiers

Getting balanced humidity in your house might help keep your loved ones healthy when it’s cold. It can aid sore throats, flaky skin and chapped lips, amidst added cold weather irritations.

If you don’t know what your residence’s humidity percentage is, we’ll measure it when we complete your indoor air quality audit. While the range fluctuates based on outdoor temperatures, HVAC professionals generally advise keeping it between 40–60 percent.

You can achieve this optimal range by using a whole-home humidifier. This equipment usually works with your furnace or air handler to deliver optimum humidity across your house. Some equipment, like the Healthy Climate® Whole-Home Power Humidifier, use a built-in fan to move humidity when your heating system isn’t operating.

*Based on in-duct testing that shows Healthy Climate® filters reduce airflow restriction. Greater restriction of airflow creates a greater load on a unit’s fan motor, increasing energy consumption.
